It’s looking apparent that the Cardinals are going to have to make a choice this off season – Colby Rasmus or Tony LaRussa. Over the weekend, secrets have come out that Rasmus had requested a trade at least twice since he’s been up in the majors.

Now, we all know that Tony LaRussa can be a difficult manager to play under – just ask Scott Rolen, Ron Gant, Ozzie Smith, etc, etc. His dog house is big and difficult to get out of. It’s appeared that Rasmus carved out his corner before even joining the Cardinals; there have been episodes where his father, who coached him in high school, questioned the big league club and how it operates.

Rasmus, once the prized prospect of the system, has established himself as a regular in the line up, when nagging injuries aren’t an issue. He’s been very streaky – when he’s on he’s on, but when he’s struggling it’s bad. It’s been said that he requested a trade last year (when he split playing time with Rick Ankiel) and earlier this season; he’s denied making the trade request this year.

Which side is right? LaRussa has a history of being difficult and it seems like he’s not getting as much from his players this year. Rasmus has his teammates questioning him and his desire to be in St. Louis.
