41 starts entering SR season, bulked up to 306 from 295 according to Boston Globe
POSITIVES:
- can be left alone to block speed rusher off the edge although he’ll have trouble with elite pass rushers (had trouble with Robert Quinn)
- has long arms to keep rusher at bay
- most of the time gets his hands on the inside of rusher
- could improve kick slide
- athletic enough to be a franchise left tackle
- quick feet
- good balance
- quick off the snap
- good punch
- good job of sinking hips and extending arms
- good knee bend and form in pass protection
- athletic enough to get to edge and hold off speed rusher
- great leg drive
- good job of zoning in on target in 2nd level and blocking him out of play
- keeps legs churning while blocking
- able to overpower defenders and open up running lane
- good job of turning defender and sealing off hole for runner
- quick off the snap
- seals off edge for runner well
NEGATIVES:
- a few times has let rusher get under his pads or let defender dip their shoulder under and come around the corner
- needs to get bigger and stronger
- run blocking is good, but needs to improve if he wants to be considered top LT in 2011
Projection: 1st round
SUMMARY: I think by the end of the 2010 season, Castonzo will be considered a top 15 prospect. Yes, he has strength concerns according to some, but he’s proven that he can add on the extra weight (295 to 306 prior to 2010 season). He’s been nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship and comes from Boston College, who usually cranks out very good offensive linemen. His run blocking needs work, but his pass protection should be considered very good. He’s a lock for the first round.
