GM Scores: John Mozeliak

The second GM in the series is John Mozeliak of the St. Louis Cardinals (call me a homer, but I was interested to see how he’s done). Mozeliak took over after the 2007 season, so he’s had 3 seasons under his belt. He’s made 11 trades and 30 signings in that time and has had no draft picks make the majors.

Mozeliak averages 11.0 WAR per year due to his moves. He’s added a total of 33.1 WAR over his tenure. The yearly totals:
2008: 22.7
2009: 2.9
2010: 7.5

Trades
For Mo’s trades, he’s given up 9.2 WAR and received 9.1 WAR; it’s a net WAR of -.1. That’s pretty much to be expected with a GM with so little experience.

Top 3 Deals
3.8 Net WAR – 07/24/2009: Traded Brett Wallace, Clayton Mortensen, and Shane Peterson to the A’s for Matt Holliday.
2.8 Net WAR – 12/14/2007: Traded Jim Edmonds to the Padres for David Freese.
1.9 Net WAR – 07/31/2010: Traded Ryan Ludwick to the Padres for Jake Westbrook (Indians) and Nick Greenwood (Padres).

The Cardinals can still see an increase in the Edmonds/Freese deal, as Freese hasn’t signed new contract and is playing with the Cardinals. The Ludwick deal can go both ways, as Ludwick is in the final year of his contract with the Padres, but the Cardinals could see a return from Greenwood, if he makes the majors. Mortensen and Peterson are still with Oakland and could help them if they can make it to the big leauges; Mortensen has, but hasn’t had an impact yet.

Bottom 3 Deals
-3.9 Net WAR – 01/14/2008: Traded Scott Rolen to the Blue Jays for Troy Glaus.
-2.4 Net WAR – 12/04/2008: Traded Luke Gregerson and Mark Worrell to the Padres for Khalil Greene.
-1.2 Net WAR – 06/27/2009: Traded Chris Perez and Jess Todd to the Indians for Mark DeRosa.

The Cardinals cannot get anything positive from their ends of these deals; all 3 players acquired are no longer with the team. Perez, Todd, and Gregerson are all still on the deals that brought them their, so it looks like they will hit against the Cardinals.

Mozeliak has made 2 deals this off-season (Blake Hawksworth for Ryan Theriot and Brendan Ryan for Maikel Cleto) that could factor in for next year.

Overall, only a couple of big deals have been made under Mozeliak; Holliday signed after the season and now scores for a free agent. The Glaus deal looked good the first year, but Rolen put up his old numbers for the second year while Glaus missed the season. Fans in St. Louis still groan about the Ludwick deal, while I can understand why it was made.

Free Agents
St. Louis doesn’t have problems attracting free agents, even with normally limited funds. Most of their big moves are re-signings guys already here.

Mozeliak’s WAR for signings is 33.2.

Top 5 Signings
13.9 WAR – 03/20/2008: Adam Wainwright (Extension)
7.5 WAR – 01/20/2008: Yadier Molina (Extension)
5.5 WAR – 01/06/2010: Matt Holliday (Re-signed)
2.4 WAR – 03/14/2008: Kyle Lohse
1.8 WAR – 01/04/2008: Aaron Miles (Re-signed)

Holliday, Wainwright, and Molina both are still accruing WAR and will continue to see an increase. Miles was non-tendered and signed a 1 year deal later.

Then there was Kyle Lohse. Lohse signed at the start of spring training and had a successful season. He ended up with a 4 year deal that hasn’t gone as well (see below).

Go back to the top and look at the per year WAR average. You’ll see that this is so high due to the Wainwright and Molina extensions.

Bottom 5 Signings
-3.6 WAR – 09/29/2008: Kyle Lohse (Extension)
-0.6 WAR – 12/17/2008: Joe Thurston
-0.5 WAR – 07/07/2010: Mike MacDougal
-0.3 WAR – 02/19/2008: Ron Villone
-0.2 WAR – Multiple: Mark Johnson, Josh Phelps, Randy Winn

Outside of Lohse, Mozeliak hasn’t missed much yet; none of the deals were for more than 1 year and cost very much.

Draft
2008 – None
2009 – None
2010 – None

No player drafted under Mozeliak has made it to the Majors with the Cardinals. 2008 first rounder Brett Wallace made his major league debut this year for the Astos (via the Athletics and Blue Jays). 2009 first rounder Shelby Miller was in Lo A. 2010 first rounder Zach Cox could move fast though.

Grade
I can’t officially do grades until I’m finished, but Mozeliak seems run of the mill. He’s pretty much even on trades, done well overall for signings, and hasn’t been impacted by the draft.

Look for 2011 to be a big year for Mozeliak, if/when the Albert Pujols deal is completed. Walt Jocketty signed him to the previous extension and he’s posted a 50.8 WAR since the 2004 season.

A Note About the Scores
I’ll be re-reviewing all of the scores each year. I don’t think I mentioned this, but the year the deal was made will show a change each year. So, any increase Holliday brings over the course of the remaining years of his deal will show up for the 2010 season. When Cox makes his MLB debut, his WAR will impact the 2010 draft totals.

I’ll be creating a static page that has all of the score listed and will put this information there.
