The 5th GM in the series is Alex Anthopoulos, current GM of the Toronto Blue Jays. Anthopoulos took over for J.P. Ricciardi after the 2009 season and has 1 year under his belt.
Anthopoulos has made 8 trades and 14 signings in his 1 year on the job; he’s added 4.2 wins to the team.
Since he’s really limited on his moves, we’ll only have a top and bottom 2 for trades and signings.
Trades
Anthopoulos has a total net WAR in trades of -4.9; this was mainly from 1 deal that you’ll see below.
Top 2 Trades
1.7 Net WAR – 12/23/2009: Traded Brandon League and Johermyn Chavez to the Mariners for Brandon Morrow.
0.8 Net WAR – 04/15/2010: Traded cash to the Giants for Fred Lewis.
Only the League/Morrow trade will continue to change; all 3 players are playing under their current contract. Fred Lewis was non-tendered, so the 0.8 stands.
Bottom 2 Trades
-6.8 Net WAR – 12/16/2009: Traded Roy Halladay to the Phillies for Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor, and Travis d’Arnaud.
-0.8 Net WAR – 04/15/2010: Traded a player to be named later to the Athletics for Dana Eveland.
Halladay signed an extension with the Phillies, so only the Blue Jay’s side can change. Taylor was traded the same day, but Drabek and d’Arnaud could move this in the Jay’s favor. Eveland didn’t even last 2 months north of the border before being traded to the Pirates.
Anthopoulos only had 3 negative trades (the other was -0.1 – Merkin Valdez for cash).
Signings
Anthopoulos has a total WAR of 9.1 for signings, waivers, and extensions.
Top 2 Signings
3.0 WAR – 12/16/2009: John Buck
2.8 WAR – 11/26/2009: Alex Gonzalez
Both players are gone from the Blue Jays, but Anthopoulos has plenty of deals that will over takes these, like the extensions for Adam Lind and Ricky Romero. Gonzalez was traded by mid-season in a deal that brought Yunel Escobar north.
Bottom 2 Signings
-0.1 WAR – 3 deals: Mike McCoy (Waivers), Jeremy Reed, Nick Green
0.0 WAR – 11/03/2009: Jarrett Hoffpauir (Waivers)
As you can see, only the 3 -0.1 deals lost the Blue Jays WAR. All the players above are no longer with the team. The law of averages says he’s bound for a couple of bad deals.
Draft Picks
None of the 2010 draft picks have made the majors. It’ll be a few years before the Jays’ see dividends.
Grade
Since I’ve only completed a portion of the scores, I can’t grade yet.
Even if I could grade GMs, someone like Anthopoulos would be difficult to grade since he’s got very limited experience.
