The Marlins have some nice prospects, but they don’t have an elite one. Matt Dominguez will get the shot to take over at third. Christian Yelich has tools but needs time to develop. I’m pretty high on Chad James and am expecting a big season out of the lefty. Mike Dunn should be a factor in the bullpen this year. After these guys, there are a lot of nice players that need to take a step forward to have true value.
2010 Review:
The Marlins were never expected to make the playoffs, but many didn’t expect his season either. They fired Freddi Gonzalez mid-season and Edwin Rodriguez took over; Rodriguez was named full time manager after the season.
Rookie Michael Stanton made the successful transition to the Majors; he showed power but needs to get a better feel for MLB pitching. Logan Morrison also joined the Major League roster and should stick this spring.
First baseman Gaby Sanchez also had a good season and looks to build upon it.
Starter Josh Johnson had a phenomenal season that was unfortunately capped off with a season ending injury. He was heading into August as the best pitcher in the Majors.
2011 Preview:
The Marlins finally un-loaded Dan Uggla as a way to cut some costs (sound familiar Marlin fans?). It was a questionable deal, as they traded him within the division and didn’t get much for him.
The money they saved went into starter Javier Vazquez, catcher John Buck, and reliever Randy Choate. I think Vazquez will have a good year, as he tends to pitch better in odd numbered years. They definitely over paid for Buck, but he was one of the better catchers in a weak market.
I don’t think the Marlins did enough to over take the Phillies or Braves; in fact, I think the Mets and Nationals got much better. I see the Marlins dropping to the cellar this year.
