Many are hoping Dustin Ackley sticks at second, which it appears he will for the time being. He could be playing for Seattle this season (after he’s assured of not being a Super-2 player). His future double play mate, Nick Franklin is a pretty sure bet to join him in Seattle in the future. Michael Pineda will make a nice rotation-mate with Felix Hernandez. After these 3, there are some good players, but also a lot of hoping they come around as expected.

2010 Review:
On paper, this team should have been great. They acquired Cliff Lee to anchor the rotation. They added Chone Figgins. They had King Felix locked up to a team-friendly deal. Ichiro could still play.

The problem was…everything. Lee missed time early in the season. Erik Bedard was supposed to have been healthy and wasn’t. Figgins slumped for most of the season as he played out of position.

The results were dealing Lee for Justin Smoak and some prospects, no sight of Bedard, and a last place finish. The bright spot was King Felix winning the AL Cy Young.

2011 Preview:
The Mariners are in the process of rebuilding. Smoak and Hernandez figure to be 2 of the main components. Adding Ackley this season will also present a step forward.

They added Brendan Ryan, who beat out incumbent Jack Wilson, as the shortstop. He’s not going to set any batting record, but his glove makes up for his lack of bat. Wilson will be a stop-gap at second.

This team really hasn’t improved and I’m expecting another rough season in Seattle.
