Picks in 2011 Draft: (overall draft grade: B): I was debating on whether to give the Skins a B or B-, but I think that since their draft class is so much larger than in past years, I decided to give them the B. More draft picks equal more chances of finding good players in theory. But it’s better than giving up so many picks like they have in the past. As far as the picks go, I think Kerrigan is better suited for a 4-3 end spot, but we’ll just have to see how he progresses. I thin k Jenkins can do well at 3-4 end and Hankerson was good value, but may not become a star. I think even though I had Helu rated lower than where he was picked, he has a chance to become a very good back, especially with Shanahan’s history with running backs. Niles Paul is a big receiver for whoever will be the Redskins QB in 2011.

Rd 1, Pick 16 (16) Ryan Kerrigan OLB, Purdue! – I know I had him rated at 15, but he’s a better fit for 4-3 end. I don’t doubt that he can play OLB in 3-4 defense, but he’s not this high for a team running a 3-4.

Rd 2, Pick 9 (41) Jarvis Jenkins DE, Clemson – Jenkins is solid against the run and the pass, has good athleticism for his size.

Rd 3, Pick 15 (79) Leonard Hankerson WR, Miami (FL) – Really like this pick for where the Redskins got him. He’s got the size and has improved his hands over the last two seasons at Miami.
Grade: A Rated: 53
Rd 4, Pick 8 (105) Roy Helu RB, Nebraska – Showed explosion and great acceleration in his senior season with some big runs and big games. Shanahan could work some of his running back magic and turn him into a 1,000 yard back.

Rd 5, Pick 15 (146) Dejon Gomes DB, Nebraska – does well against the run, but doesn’t have the athleticism coveted in a prospect.

Rd 6, Pick 12 (177) Evan Royster RB, Penn State! – great production while at Happy Valley, doesn’t have that “next gear” to run away from defenders, but will be good in between the tackles pounding out runs.

Rd 6, Pick 13 (178) Aldrick Robinson WR, SMU – another skill position for the starved Redskins offense. If John Beck is going to be their starter, he’ll need a little bit of help.

Rd 7, Pick 50 (253) Chris Neild NT, West Virginia – one of the last players in this draft that can be considered a good fit at nose tackle. Insurance for Albert Haynesworth.

2010 Redskins’ Draft review:
Here are some interesting nuggets of information I saw while watching the draft press conferences held by the Redksins: New General Manager Bruce Allen said that the draft trade value chart was a deterrent to trading picks rather than an aid. Not a fan of it. Allen didn’t clarify on how much influence Dan Snyder would have in the picking of the players, but he said that he’d be in the room and would be interested in the character of the players who would be putting on the burgundy and gold. On private visits, players aren’t allowed to work out at team’s place, but they are allowed to have trainers and doctors check the players out, have coaches go over schemes, and get to know players better. Allen said they’d take the best overall player. Scott Campbell (Director of Player Personnel) chose which players to bring in for private visits. Mike Shanahan, after picking Trent Williams, said in a response that need was a big factor. So it would appear since Shanny has final say, the Redskins probably pick by need. Shanahan put to rest any question of whether there was any work ethic concerns about first round pick Trent Williams. He mentioned talking to Bob Stoops and numerous coaches about Williams and came away convinced there was no concern there. At the post-draft press conference, Allen stated that the picks “went along the board at the end (of the draft).”

Looking back at my grades for the Redskins’ 2010 draft class:
I gave the Redskins a C and I don’t see that changing. I liked the Trent Williams pick in hindsight, since he was better than Russell Okung for the Redskins’ zone-blocking scheme. I’d change his grade from B- to A and Selvish Capers, their last pick, from A to B. He was a project player and ended up on the practice squad. I had him rated way too high at 121, but he’s still developing. The Redskins started a rebuilding process last year after introducing Bruce Allen as the new GM. Of course, then they hired Mike Shanahan. The rebuilding got off to a bad start with a bad draft and obviously, the bad trade for Donovan McNabb and the Albert Haynesworth fiasco. Now the Redskins have a ton of free agents they need to re-sign (mostly on defense) and they only have two picks in the first four rounds. This is going to take a while…
