As of July 2nd, the International Free Agent period has begun in baseball. Many teams are making a splash in the foreign market, while a lot of teams haven’t even signed a player. Part of this is organizational philosophy; teams are more willing to spend on the draft, where they have a better idea of what type of prospects they are signing. The international free agents are harder to predict, since they are signed at a younger age (16 for international vs 18-21 for drafted); many don’t develop or looked better in the tryouts than they really are.
