Picks in 2011 NFL Draft: (overall draft grade: C-): What was more surprising? The Seahawks win over the Saints in the wild card playoffs last year or how bad they drafted? I gave the Seahawks an A- grade in 2010, but their 2011 draft class was clearly a step backwards. Carpenter and Moffitt were picks who can become good players (as is the case with all picks), but the value just wasn’t there. Better players at the same positions were available. Seattle may just feel that both linemen were better fits for what they’re trying to do, however. Just an overall disappointing draft value wise.
(! Indicates draft pick who was interviewed, had a private workout, etc. prior to the draft according to my compiled list):
Rd 1, Pick 25 (25) James Carpenter OL, Alabama – My 61st rated player. He was reportedly a late riser on team’s boards, but I stayed true to what I watched during the season. Seattle said that they liked that he could play four positions along the line and will start out at right tackle. I loved what the Seahawks did in the first round last year (DB Earl Thomas & OT Russell Okung), but I’ve got big concerns about taking Carpenter this high.
Grade: D Rated: 61
Rd 3, Pick 11 (75) John Moffitt OG, Wisconsin – mauler in the run game, but too early to take him. The Seahawks definitely wanted to get stronger in the run game.
Grade: C Rated: 159
Rd 4, Pick 2 (99) K.J. Wright LB, Mississippi State – Solid pick because of the value and the fact that Seattle has been looking for some better production from their linebackers.
Grade: B+ Rated: 111
Rd 4, Pick 10 (107) Kris Durham WR, Georgia! – Durham played well when AJ Green was suspended. I don’t think any of Seattle’s picks were good value.
Grade: F Rated: 307
Rd 5, Pick 23 (154) Richard Sherman DB, Stanford – former wide receiver has good hands, but lacks instincts.
Grade: C Rated: 244
Rd 5, Pick 25 (156) Mark Legree FS, Appalachian State! – This was a weak safety class and I’m seeing a lot of reaches. Seattle has yet another reach here. 22 career interceptions against lower competition.
Grade: C Rated: 225
Rd 6, Pick 8 (173) Byron Maxwell DB, Clemson – Physical corner with good size and speed.
Grade: B- Rated: 233
Rd 7, Pick 2 (205) Lazarius Levingston DL, LSU – Injuries happened a bit too often to the defensive line in Seattle. Levingston will help with depth.
Grade: D+ Rated: 295
Rd 7, Pick 39 (242) Malcolm Smith OLB, Notre Dame! – struggles with tackling some, but is excellent athlete.
Grade: C+ Rated: NR
2010 Seahawks Draft review:
Here are some interesting nuggets of information I found out about the Seahawks’ 2010 draft class from their press conferences: Oh, John and Pete are just a couple of jokesters. They had some fun with reporters and cracked a few jokes. Anyways, they had some concern when Philadelphia traded up. General Manager John Schneider thought they were going to pick Earl Thomas, but obviously, that didn’t happen. Schneider said they are a needs drafting team. Okung has a “Tebow”- like approach to the game. Great, this guy is crowning Tebow before he even gets into the league. If he wants to crown his ass, then go ahead and crown it! But he was who we thought he was! Schneider compared Thomas to Green Bay’s Nick Collins, but shorter. They felt fortunate that Russell Okung and Brandon Tate fell to them. “He’s got his hands on tons of balls” – Pete Carroll on Earl Thomas. In the first two press conferences they talked about absolutely being a needs drafting team, but after the third day of the draft, Schneider was talking like they picked the best players off the board regardless of position. Pete Carroll’s time at USC had an influence in the draft. Just before the 2010 draft, Anthony McCoy’s evaluation had character concerns written all over it. He was a potential day two pick, but dropped to being considered undraftable by most teams after testing positive on a drug test. Pete came to his rescue, though, taking him in the sixth round. Konz had a 46 inch vertical. That’s ridiculous.
Rd 1, Pick 6 (6) Russell Okung OT, Oklahoma State – 10 games, 10 starts
Rd 1, Pick 14 (14) Earl Thomas SS, Texas – 16 starts, 76 TCK, 7 PD, 5 INT, 1 FF
Rd 2, Pick 28 (60) Golden Tate WR, Notre Dame – 11 games, 21 REC, 227 YDS, 10.8 AVG, 52 LNG, 2 RUSH, 4 YDS, 2 AVG, 1 KR, 10 YDS, 16 PR, 12.6 AVG, 63 LNG
Rd 4, Pick 13 (111) Walter Thurmond CB, Oregon – 14 games, 1 start, 37 TCK, 7 PD
Rd 4, Pick 29 (127) E.J. Wilson DE, North Carolina – picked up by Tampa Bay
Rd 5, Pick 2 (133) Kam Chancellor FS, Virginia Tech – 16 games, 23 TCK, 1 SCK, 1 PD, 1 FF
Rd 6, Pick 16 (185) Anthony McCoy TE, USC – 2 games, no stats, ended up on IR
Rd 7, Pick 29 (236) Dexter Davis DE, Arizona State – 15 games, 13 TCK, 1 SCK
Rd 7, Pick 38 (245) Jameson Konz WR, Kent State – no games, IR
Looking back at my grades for the 2010 Seahawks draft class: I gave the Seahawks an overall grade of A- after the draft. I loved the Okung (A), Thomas (A), and Tate (A) picks. I liked every pick except for Anthony McCoy (C+), but Carroll may be able to influence McCoy the way no other coach in the NFL could since he coached McCoy at USC. EJ Wilson should be bumped down to a B- considering he didn’t make the Seahawks’ roster and was later picked up by Tampa Bay. I really liked this draft and even though they picked based off of needs, their picks (except for McCoy) were all in the same draft range of where I had the players ranked. I feel an A- was the right grade to give this class, so A- it shall remain.
First Round Picks From Last Five Years: Russell Okung OT, Earl Thomas S, Aaron Curry OLB, Lawrence Jackson DE, Kelly Jennings CB
