Mike W’s Outlook: Through their many free agent scores, the Eagles have sent a message that they want to be serious Super Bowl contenders, if not the front runners. They returned all the key producers from their top offense and added some offensive line support in the draft. On the defensive side, they locked up the prize of the offseason with Nnamdi Asomugha, and they also hope to secure an iffy defensive line with Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins. All of that points to Philly being a top team.
But there are issues. Michael Vick is terrific but very breakable — a reality which the Eagles were confronted with by Vick’s mid-season injury and his banged up state late in the year. On top of it, the Eagles have a lot of questions at linebacker—not one of their starting candidates is proven. If Vick can stay upright an effective for 16 games and the defense succeeds despite the linebackers’ inexperience, the Eagles could cruise to a high seed. If not, they’ll collapse under the weight of their expectations. It’s a challenge every big spender faces.

2011 Eagles Draft Review:
The Eagles didn’t make a significant splash in the draft, ultimately using free agency to make their improvements. However, some draftees can be early contributors.
Overall Draft Grade:
B
Picks in 2011 NFL Draft
Rd 1, Pick 23: Danny Watkins, OL, Baylor- His toughness, size and versatility, particularly as an interior blocker, can earn him a starting job on a line that struggled at times last season.
Grade: B
Rating: 7.5
Rd 2, Pick 54: Jaiquawn Jarrett, DB, Temple- The young bruiser can probably earn a starting job in a secondary that will protect him with coverage.
Grade: B
Rating: 7.5
Rd 3, Pick 90: Curtis Marsh, DB, Utah State- His size will give him a role in packages with multiple defensive backs, and the Eagles’ strong secondary will take pressure off.
Grade: B-
Rating: 7
Rd 4, Pick 116: Casey Matthews, LB, Oregon- He could become an opening day starter on a team that’s thin at LB.
Grade: B-
Rating: 7
Rd 4, Pick 120: Alex Henery, Kicker, Nebraska- With David Akers off the team, the kicker position is his to lose. His powerful leg is a great asset
Grade: B
Rating: 7
Rd 5, Pick 149: Dion Lewis, RB, Pittsburgh- His quickness and athleticism are intriguing, but he is tiny, and didn’t set the Big East on fire as a sophomore. Iffy pick
Grade: C-
Rating: 5.5
Rd 5, Pick 161: Julian Vandervelde, OL, Iowa- Vandervelde is most likely a backup, at best. He isn’t an overwhelming talent.
Grade: C-
Rating: 5.5
Rd 6, Pick 191: Jason Kelce, OL, Cincinnati- He is apparently not ideal as a QB protector, which doesn’t do the Eagles much good given Vick’s injury risk.
Grade: D+
Rating: 5
