Earlier today, the official Kansas City Chiefs website announced that head coach Todd Haley had been relieved of his duties.

Haley was named head coach after the Chiefs let Herm Edwards go after the 2008 season. Haley’s record ended at 19-27 with just one playoff appearance (after the 2010 season). They were beaten 30-7, abruptly ending their surprise season.

Injuries have been a major part of the 2011 season for Kansas City. They’ve lost tight end Tony Moeaki, running back Jamaal Charles, quarterback Matt Cassel, and safety Eric Berry for the season, all key parts to their team. Injuries are a part of the NFL, but the Chiefs and Haley didn’t respond well enough in order for him to keep his job.

Haley was known as a bit of an aggressive coach, both in his coaching style and in his dealings with players. When he was the offensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals in the 2009 NFC Championship game, he had blowups with quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Anquan Boldin. He had a spat with Cassel earlier this season caught on camera during a game against Minnesota. Haley has said that this is his style of motivation.

Romeo Crennel, Kansas City’s defensive coordinator, will take over as interim head coach.

The Chiefs are 5-8 this year and yesterday had an embarrassing loss to the Jets, 37-10.

Haley is the second head coach to be fired this season. Two weeks ago, the Jacksonville Jaguars fired Jack Del Rio.
