2012 NFL Mock Draft II

* denotes junior prospects
^ denotes projected picks

1    *Andrew Luck QB, Stanford The pick that everyone has had pegged since last summer is just under three months away from becoming reality. Luck has the bloodlines, the work ethic, the smarts, athleticism, arm, leadership, and everything else an NFL team could ask for in a quarterback prospect.
2    *Justin Blackmon WR, Oklahoma State  The Rams could go with Blackmon here to help their atrocious wide receiving corps (or corpse) or with USC’s Matt Kalil. Another possibility is to trade out and allow a team to move up and grab RGIII.
3    *Matt Kalil OT, USC  The Vikings missed Bryant McKinnie this past season and they’re desperate for a left tackle. Kalil is the top tackle prospect this year. He’s got the athleticism, but isn’t quite there in terms of being a complete finished product…yet.
4    *Robert Griffin III QB, Baylor Apparently the Browns are interested in keeping Peyton Hillis around. That’s fine, but I still think they’d have to take Griffin here instead of Trent Richardson.
5    *Trent Richardson RB, Alabama  LeGarrette Blount showed some promise after his rookie season, but his average yards per rush dropped from 5 to 4.2 and the Bucs were only ranked 30th in total rushing yards.
6    Ryan Tannehill QB, Texas A&M  I believe Tannehill’s athleticism will boost his stock at the Combine and he will get what most people will consider “over-drafted.” Most quarterbacks get over-drafted anyway. It’s obvious with Rex Grossman in the starting slot currently, that QB is the Redskins’ top need.
7    *Morris Claiborne CB, LSU  Rashean Mathis is getting older and the Jaguars’ defense is missing someone who can be number one or a shutdown corner.
8    Quinton Coples DL, North Carolina  The Panthers were gashed up the middle and against the run game as a whole in 2011. Coples can be used at multiple positions along the defensive line, providing great value in this pick.
9    *Riley Reiff OT, Iowa  If the Dolphins lose out on RGIII and Ryan Tannehill, which I have happening in this particular mock draft, they will have most likely draft an offensive tackle who can help improve the right side of their offensive line. Help for the opposite side from Jake Long will be needed especially if they have a new quarterback from say…Indianapolis.
10    Michael Floyd WR, Notre Dame  The top priority for the Bills this offseason is to get a number one wide receiver, whether it be re-signing Stevie Johnson or drafting one. Even if they re-sign Johnson, I think they should draft another wide receiver.
11    *Jonathan Martin OT, Stanford  Jared Gaither and Barry Richardson aren’t cutting it at right tackle. In my opinion, it’s a close battle between Martin and Reiff as to who’s the second best tackle prospect this year.
12    Courtney Upshaw LB, Alabama  Upshaw has shown the ability at Alabama to put his hand on the ground or play linebacker. I believe he will go early because of his versatility.
13    *David DeCastro OG, Stanford  Kevin Kolb, or whoever is the quarterback for the Cardinals in 2012, will need all the protection they can get. DeCastro is an excellent guard prospect and is well worth taking here at 13.
14    *Dre Kirkpatrick CB, Alabama Kirkpatrick’s past won’t be an obstacle for Jerry Jones picking the corner in this slot.
15    *Michael Brockers DT, LSU  The Eagles need help up the middle of their defense to stop the run. Middle linebacker and defensive tackle are the top needs for the Eagles.
16    *Alshon Jeffrey WR, South Carolina  The Jets fell apart this past season. Mark Sanchez is on shaky ground and he needs a true number one receiver and game-changer.
17    Mark Barron SS, Alabama  (from Oakland) Barron is the top safety in a weak safety class this year. He can play in the box very well, has very good size, and showed that he is a tough player. He played a chunk of 2010 season with a torn pectoral muscle.
18    Melvin Ingram DE/OLB, South Carolina  The Chargers have a need at rush linebacker. Larry English has been a disappointment and the pass rush for San Diego only came up with 32 sacks in 2011.
19    Mike Adams OT, Ohio State  Right now, Adams is a late first round pick, but I think he’ll get into the top 20 with his athleticism and workout performances. J’Marcus Webb isn’t an answer at left tackle and last year’s first round pick Gabe Carimi is more of a right tackle.
20    *Luke Kuechly LB, Boston College  Barrett Ruud is a free agent since he was only signed for a one year deal. The Titans will have two second year players (Akeem Ayers and Colin McCarthy) as starters at linebacker next season, but the third linebacker spot still needs an upgrade.
21    Devon Still DT, Penn State  Cincy has three defensive lineman who could be hitting free agency this offseason. They’re solid up the middle, but the fact that Still is still available here would be too good to pass up.
22    Kendall Wright WR, Baylor I have the Browns using their first pick on RGIII, so they need to add a weapon for him to pass to. Who better than his college teammate Kendall Wright? Funny thing is that I didn’t even realize I had the college teammates going to the same NFL team until I started to type the pick analyses.
23    Vinny Curry DE, Marshall  Detroit is looking to re-sign Cliff Avril this offseason, but even after they do that, they still  have an aging Kyle Vanden Bosch (turned 33 last November).
24    *Dontari Poe DT, Memphis  We’ve seen the Steelers kind of ignore their age up front on defense up until a couple of years ago. They’ve drafted two defensive ends (Cameron Heyward and Ziggy Hood), so now it’s time to draft a young nose tackle.
25    *Dwayne Allen TE, Clemson  I think Tim Tebow’s biggest improvement could come from the Broncos picking up a very good tight end. A safety valve over the middle who he can just throw it up for (or jump pass it to…ugh, i hate that jump pass).
26    *Don’ta Hightower LB, Alabama  This is more of a best available player pick, because the way it ended up, the Texans missed out on nose tackle Dontari Poe.
27    *Fletcher Cox DT, Mississippi State (from New Orleans) I think Bill Belichick is going to look at Vince Wilfork turning 30 this past season and will realize he needs to start planning for the future at defensive tackle.
28    *Nick Perry DE/OLB, USC  The Packers need someone opposite of Clay Matthews. Frank Zombo was injured last season.
29    *Peter Konz C, Wisconsin  Matt Birk is deciding if he wants to retire or not and Andre Gurode wasn’t able to fill in well enough at center. So center is a pretty important need for Baltimore this offseason.
30    *Mohamed Sanu WR, Rutgers  Michael Crabtree is disappointing for where the 49ers drafted him, Braylon Edwards was cut before the season ended, and let’s just say after Crabtree, they don’t have much of anything at wide receiver.
^ 31    Janoris Jenkins CB, North Alabama  They drafted Prince Amukamara last year, but secondary help is still required.
^32    Alfonzo Dennard CB, Nebraska  The Pats’ secondary this season ranked dead last and if not for the offense and the coach, it would’ve prevented them from getting to the Super Bowl and probably the playoffs all together. It’s got to be helped.
