It’s being reported that the Oakland Athletics have signed Yoenis Cespedes to a 4 years, $36 million contract. It’s caught the baseball world off-guard, since Oakland was not expected to sign the slugger.
Cespedes, 26, defected from Cuba, where he was the top player. He’s instantly a top 25 prospects and moves to the top of Oakland’s system. He’s could battle for the starting right field job, but some scouts believe he could use a little time in the minors.
The Florida Miami Marlins were the front-runner for the outfielder, but they were reportedly offering 6 years. The shorter deal was probably more appealing, as he’ll be a free agent at the age of 30.
The top international free agent remaining is Jorge Soler; he’s expected to sign with the Cubs, but as with Cespedes, you never know what’s going to happen. Soler is also a Cuban defector and also plays the outfielder. Some scouts like him better than Cespedes, but he’s going to need more time before he’s a finished product.
