2012 NFL Draft Preview: Green Bay Packers

GREEN BAY PACKERS

Position needs before the draft: RB, DE, OLB, CB, S

Notable Additions:
Jeff Saturday C, Colts
Anthony Hargrove DE, Seahawks

Notable Losses:
Matt Flynn QB, Seahawks
Scott Wells C, Rams
Pat Lee CB, Raiders
Nick Collins S

5 First round possibilities:
Shea McClellin OLB, Boise State – The latest buzz is that the Packers are targeting McClellin with their first round pick.

Doug Martin RB, Boise State – The Packers have drafted a running back in the last two drafts (James Starks ’10, Alex Green ’11). Don’t be surprised if they pick one early this time around.

Andre Branch OLB, Clemson – If Shea McClellin isn’t there, the Pack may have to trade out (or up) and select another pass rush threat.

Devon Still DE, Penn State – Still would be an end for the Packers and be able to help get some pass rush help.

David Wilson RB, Virginia Tech – Wilson is a second round running back, but could be an option since the Packers ranked pretty low rushing the ball.

  1. Definitely a huge blow to the Packers D. I hope Nick the best in whatever road he decides to take(continue playing with the risk or walking away). I’ll always remember his pick 6 in the SB. His TD celebration was my wallpaper for quite a few months after the fact.
Onto the business side….the Pack definitely have to address the Safety position now. I don’t see TT reaching for Harrison Smith at #28 though. I still see them taking a 5 tech DE or pass rushing OLB at #28 and will add a Safety in round 2 or 3

You’re right on point there Erik. Thompson needed to address the safety position even before the release of Collins. You’ll see McClellin mocked to the Packers in most mock drafts out there, but I saw today that the Ravens are interested in him as well. So I could see Whitney Mercilus, Chandler Jones, Andre Branch being possibilities there as well. I’d watch for Jared Crick in the 2nd or 3rd for DE.
