It still put Joe Paterno square in the eye of the storm. Jerry Sandusky was investigated back 1998 for molelesting a youngboy. No Charges were made and three years later Sandusky was at it again, this time an eyewitness walked in and to Joe Paterno.
What the family’s report doesn’t do is address how much Joe Paterno covered up this mess. I don’t want to be crude, but it’s hard to feel for the Paterno family when Sandusky ruined the lives of so many. And at no point did Joe Paterno take it upon himself to go to the authorities and say “This is what Sandusky did and I want him proscuted to the fullest extent of the law. I will pay for the attroney fees of the victims to make sure it happen.”
Had he said that he would not only preserved his legacy, but would have used his power in a way that would have benfited others (the victims). Instead his legacy is tainted because he did more to cover up what Sandusky did to those children.
If 1998 wasn’t the one that got Paterno to do something, then 2001 should have been the wake up call to get him to not only report Sandusky to the police but have him put in jail. Again he did nothing to help the victims. He did keep it hidden to preserve his legacy and the supposed legacy of Penn State.
Why is he more to blame than anyone else not named Sandusky? Because he had more power than nearly anyone in the state of Pennsylvia not a government offical. And every coach knows what is going on with his team, especially with his coaches. To say that he didn’t know would be wrong; if he didn’t know why cover things up?
Bottom line, while the family wants to preserve his legacy, they forgot that there are real victims here; not a supposed legacy that needs real help. Each and every one of the children who crossed Sandusky’s path needs help. I said this before, and nothing that has transpired has changed.
It’s time for the Paterno family to reach out to the victims and and do what Joe Paterno didn’t do…help those children.
