The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to let Manny Ramirez go to the Chicago White Sox today; it’s not known if they are letting the Sox claim him or if a deal will be worked out.
Ramirez is due roughly $4.3MM for the remainder of the season. If they Dodgers cover some of it, they could received 3B prospect Jon Gilmore (who was part of the Javier Vazquez with the Braves). He also has a no-trade clause, but has said he’d waive it and not require compensation to do so.
Manny would be inserted as the White Sox DH, where Andruw Jones, Mark Teahen, and Mark Kotsay are splitting time. Even declining, Manny would be a huge upgrade. He can still hit fairly well, and the “Cell” is a launching pad.
The Dodgers have regretted adding the option to Manny’s deal 2 years ago. He’s been wanting out all season and has been passed by younger players. Add in the acquisition of Scott Podsednik as the 4th outfielder made Manny expendible. The Dodgers haven’t started him in the last 4 days due to the pending deal; he did attempt to pinch hit last night, but was ejected for arguing balls and strikes after 1 pitch.
