It is being reported that Jorge Posada is going to announce his retirement from baseball within the next few weeks. A life-long member of the New York Yankees, and a member of the “Core Four”, Posada has been a beloved player of the New York Yankees fans and respected player through his baseball career.
I do not want to do a post-mortem of Posada. There will be hundreds of those coming in the next few weeks. The other discussion that will start is “Is Jorge Posada a Hall of Famer?” I will not start that discussion either. However, I will fan its flames by giving you Posada’s numbers and compare them to other current Hall of Famers. Then, I will allow all of you to discuss.
Let’s start with WAR (Wins Above Replacement). His career WAR for position players is 44.7, tied for 224th place of all time with Earle Combs. He has a better career WAR than current Hall of Famers Nellie Fox, Heinie Manush, Travis Jackson, Phil Rizzuto, Jim Rice, Lou Brock, Roy Campanella and Hack Wilson. His career WAR for catchers ranks him 11th of all-time among catchers.
Jorge Posada has a career on-base percentage of .374, 221st of all-time. This number is higher than current Hall of Famers Roberto Alomar, Paul Molitor, Frankie Frisch, George Kell, Pee Wee Reese, Ernie Lombardi, Yogi Berra, Carlton Fisk and Robin Yount among others. The OBP or .374 would give Posada the ranking of 9th all-time among catchers.
Jorge Posada has a career slugging percentage of .474, 220th of all-time. He has a career slugging percentage greater than current Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson, Paul Waner, Honus Waner, Nap Lajoie, Joe Gordon, Ron Santo, Tony Perez, Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk among others. Jorge Posada is ranked 8th all-time in catcher’s career slugging percentage.
Jorge Posada’s career on-base plus slugging percentage is .848, 173rd of all-time. He has a career OPS greater than current Hall of Famers George Sisler, Tony Gwynn, Tony Lazzeri, Cap Anson, Dave Winfield and Rickey Henderson among others. Jorge Posada is ranked 5th all-time among catcher’s career on-base plus slugging percentage.
Jorge Posada has 379 career doubles, 212th on the all-time list. He has more career doubles than Hall of Famers Bill Terry, Gary Carter, Pie Traynor, Nellie Fox, Eddie Mathews, Willie McCovey and Mickey Mantle. Jorge Posada ranks 7th all-time among catchers all-time in doubles.
Jorge Posada has 275 career home runs, which ranks him 165th of all-time. He has more career home runs than Hall of Famers Joe Morgan, Brooks Robinson, Robin Yount, Kirby Puckett and Bill Dickey among others. Home runs are not a good indicator as the number of runs runs has drastically increased in recent years. However, among catchers, Jorge Posada ranks 8th all-time in home runs.
In terms of runs batted in, Jorge Posada ranks 225th all-time with 1,065. He has more career runs batted in than Hall of Famers Ryne Sandberg, Ralph Kiner, Wade Boggs, Ernie Lombardi, Fred Clarke and others. Among catchers, Jorge Posada ranks 12th all-time in runs batted in.
Jorge Posada has walked 936 times in his career, 151st all-time. He has more career walks than Hall of Famers Rick Ferrell, Johnny Bench, George Davis, Larry Doby, Johnny Mize, Carlton Fisk and Joe DiMaggio among others. Jorge Posada ranks 3rd all-time among catchers in terms of walks. Only Mickey Tettleton and Gene Tenace have drawn more walks.
Jorge Posada has played more games at catcher than all but 23 other catchers. He ranks 1th in his career in putouts as a catcher. He ranks 96th all-time in career assists. He is 3rd in career errors as a catcher and 73rd in career passed balls.
He is a five-time all-star and four-time World Series Champion (he only played 8 games in the World Championship season of 1996).
Those are the numbers and the statistics.
What do you think, is Jorge Posada a Hall of Famer?
