I am not saying anything that New York Mets fans haven’t already seen or known for the past offseason. The team is hard to watch. Even after taking 2 of 3 from the Cubs in Chicago, the win yesterday only garnered 4 runs. The Mets average 3 runs per game.
So why do I say only??
How many men to they leave on base? More than 4 per game. If you took the 4 and say half of them scored then the Mets would average 5 runs per game. Not bad. The problem is they need to score to keep the bullpen in check from inploding.
So why do I say they need offense? They need a bullpen too; other than Bobby Parnell, which is their closer going forward, the team doesn’t have much.
But the run support is so bad all you have to do is watch Matt Harvey’s last start to know that they need runs just to give the pitcher breathing room.
One of the worse moves that Mets made in recent years was letting Jose Reyes walk and get nothing back in return; and that falls at the feet of Sandy Alderson. I was kind of conflicted about giving Reyes $100 million, but the Mets haven’t had a lead off hitter since he left and Ruben Tejada is no Reyes. Reyes at the top of the order would have set the tone for the team, giving it needed spark and player in his prime years.
Daniel Murphy, who the Mets are going to try at leadoff, doesn’t bunt to keep teams honest and will have to hit like Wade Boggs to make it work; neither seems realistic. Duda hits homer runs and doesn’t drive in runs, and Ike Davis lunges after everything outside of the plate and looks lost. For Davis, a piece of advice; move more on the plate if you are going to go after the outside pitch and take it to left field otherwise lay off the pitch.
Sandy Alderson is the General Manager that needs to fix this lineup, and give Terry Collins and Matt Harvey something to work with. They had a chance to get B.J. Upton and or Justin Upton and passed on it. A team devoid of any real offense doesn’t need to pass up on offense period. It is time for the Mets to make a move from outside the organization and get a big bat of a leadoff hitter that can give this team a real spark. This is getting harder to watch.
