How Did They Get Their Names – The American League West, Part 3 of 6

Have you always wondered how baseball teams got their names?  I have.  So, a little while ago I did some research and looked into each Major League Baseball team and tried to establish how they got named.  Some were easy and quick, others have a long history of names to go through.  This is the third of six postings, giving a little history about the team names and how they were developed. Gary Carters Final Hit

Another blogger put this on Facebook and it’s well worth sharing. Carter’s final hit (09/27/1992) was an RBI double that went over former teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Andre Dawson’s head.

Life Without Pujols

So what will the Cardinals do now that they are facing a future without their top hitter for the last 10 years? With Allen Craig stepping up to a full time role (when he’s back from knee surgery) and the addition of Carlos Beltran, they should be fine.

Here’s what I have projected for the 2:

Year Age G R H HR RBI AVG OBP SLG
Allen Craig 27 94 35 72 11 46 .290 .339 .499
Carlos Beltran 35 122 62 122 15 69 .274 .355 .437

Based off my Pujols Projections, Craig and Beltran will be better together than Pujols would have been by him self. They are projected to have the same total of homers (26), with the rest of the counting stats being higher (R, RBIs, etc) and the slash stats are lower (Avg/OBP/SLG). Now, I understand that they will have more plate appearances than Pujols will, but I attribute that to 2 things. First, Beltran will play centerfield when Craig is in right; Beltran is a huge upgrade over Jon Jay. Secondly, Craig will fill in at first base when Lance Berkman sits; Berkman has a track record with injuries, so it’s safe to assume that Craig will have a regular stint at first base for at least 15-games.

These 2 also won’t hamstring the team’s payroll for 10 years; this is important as Yadier Molina is a free agent after the season and, to me, he’s more important to the team than Pujols. But we’ll save that for another column.

What to Expect in 2012: Albert Pujols

I’m working on case by case predictions for players. Number one on my list was Albert Pujols. As a Cardinal fan, I wanted to see what he could do in Los Angeles and what he could have done if he stayed in St. Louis.

Yoenis Cespedes – I am Dumbfounded and Confused

Moneyball is dead.  I am officially dumbfounded.  The Oakland Athletics signed Cuban free agent Yoenis Cespedes to a 4-year, $36 million contract.  He immediately becomes their highest paid player and he has never played one inning in the major leagues.  What gives? (more…)

Athletics Stun Baseball World (Again); Sign Cespedes

It’s being reported that the Oakland Athletics have signed Yoenis Cespedes to a 4 years, $36 million contract. It’s caught the baseball world off-guard, since Oakland was not expected to sign the slugger.

2012 Top 20 Prospects – Los Angeles Angels

It’s prospect season again. I’ve had my rankings listed on team pages, but have been horrible about keeping those up to date. As I mentioned on the pages, I’m looking at other rankings when I make mine (along with scouting reports and my own opinion). Next up, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
