This is one of the best times of year for baseball fans – the beginning of camp. You get the positions battles, the look at prospects, the feel of the season. The down side is the injuries you see; Chris Carpenter is one of the latest examples.

Riding the Pine: Saying Goodbye to a Legend and the Connect to Albert Pujols
It’s been a week since St. Louis (and the Baseball World) lost Stan “the Man” Musial. I told Russ when I found out that I wasn’t surprised (his health had been going south for a while) but I was in shock. A week later, and it’s still a little surreal.
Russ did a good job already looking at what Stan meant to baseball. I’m going to tell everyone what he meant to St. Louis.

Riding the Pine…About Last Night
What a night for baseball. C.C. Sabathia single handedly shut down the Orioles, then the most thrilling game of the young post-season. Let’s quickly recap…

Riding the Pine: Problems in Pittsburgh
Things looked bright for the Pirates a month ago. They were in the pennant race, they had 2 of the top 15 prospects in baseball, and it looked like they would have their first winning season in 20 years. Then they received a reminder of last year.
The team dropped to 4-14 in the month of September. They’ve fallen to 5.5 games behind the Cardinals for the final Wild Card spot. John McDonald’s last win came August 28th, and has been demoted to the bullpen. Wandy Rodriguez has 4 wins since he joined the team (and one was in relief).
To top things off, stories have broken of the Minor League system encouraging players to be like “Hells Angels.”

Riding the Pine: And Yadier Molina Lays Down the Bunt
I’m trying to get back into the habbit of Friday columns. The goal will be to recap some of the baseball happenings from the previous week and preview the weekend.
Let’s start with some bad baseball.

Riding the Pine: The (New) Decision
Over the last few weeks, we’ve heard a lot about Stephen Strasburg and the impending decision to shut him down. It’s been mostly negative, but should it be?

Riding the Pine…Random Baseball Thoughts
It’s really been too long since I’ve sat down and really wrote about baseball. Sure, I’ve started doing Bullpen Banter with Russ, but I really haven’t looked at much going on in the world of baseball.
- This has been a crazy off-season in St. Louis; one that has caused the World Series to be over-shadowed. It’s hard to believe the Cardinals just won it 2 months ago. I have a couple of reasons for this. First off, being in Milwaukee for games 6 and 7 was a huge reason; I missed all of the local coverage of the celebration, analysis, etc. I got to see parts, but Fox ended their coverage much earlier than the local stations.

Riding the Pine: Can It Get Any Better?
Can this time of year get any better for baseball fans? The season culminates with the World Series; teams are about to get major or minor face lifts. Mangers will come and go, as do GMs (which we’ve been seeing moreso this year).
The only thing that can make it better is a historic October game.

Riding the Pine: Top 7 Cardinals Prospects
Like every year at this time, the United Cardinal Bloggers have their “Top 7 Cardinal Prospect” project. While I don’t participate in all of the projects, this is my favorite. It’s a jump start on prospect ranking.
Granted, my list will change by the time I do my official list next spring, but it’s still a fun exercise.

Riding the Pine: Social Media and Sports
Nowadays, it seem like everyone has a blog; if they don’t have a blog, they have a twitter account or a facebook page. Everyone is connected. Everyone has a voice.
It’s changed sports. We know what is going to happen as it happens. Before, someone had to wait for ESPN to list that the Padres’ Heath Bell was claimed on waivers by the Giants and the 2 team could not work out a trade. Today, MLB Trade Rumors and the local newspaper websites have all of the up to the minute details.
Most in sports don’t like this; the St. Louis Cardinals are embracing it.
