2010 Draft Signings
Here’s the update of the 2010 Baseball First Round Draft Pick non-signings (as of 08/16/2010):
1.6 Barret Loux, RHP, Arizona Diamondbacks
Loux failed his physical shortly after the draft. Arizona and Loux worked with the commissioner’s office to come to an agreement. The D’Backs will receive a compensation pick for failing to sign Loux. Loux is a free agent and can sign with any team after Sept 1.
1.9 Karsten Whitson, RHP, San Diego Padres
This is all hearsay, but apparently Whitson and the Padres had a deal in place, until Whitson decided he wanted more money. It was only a couple hundred thousand dollars, but the Padres were not happy about the proceedings and didn’t budge.
1.14 Dylan Covey, RHP, Milwaukee Brewers
Covey was sent to sign, but was diagnosed during his physical with Type 1 Diabetes. He consulted with his family and decided to go to college close to his family to learn how to manage his blood sugar. There were no hard feelings between the player and team.
One trend we’ve been seeing is above slot deals. There have been multiple records for late round bonuses this year. Don’t be surprised to see a few first rounders not get signed, as teams won’t hesitate to get first round picks for next years draft, as next years draft class is much stronger that this past draft class.
