Here are my top 100 prospects for the 2011 season. I’ve been working and updating this list since January, so I think I’m finally got it to a point I can publish it. I’ve taken into account other lists from the “professions”, my gut feeling, and any scouting report I can get my hands on. I’ll have the System Rankings soon. I’m also working on getting the final 2 team previews posted today.

Off last year’s list: Tim Melville, Noel Arguelles, Carlos Rosa, Jordan Parraz
Analysis: Easily the best system in the minors. Guys like Danny Duffy, Jeremy Jeffress, and Brett Eibner could probably be the top guys in other systems. Mike Moustakas will probably be up taking over third base by the end of May; Eric Hosmer won’t be far behind. Wil Myers has moved from behind the plate to speed up his development time; many never believed he’d stay a catcher anyways.

15. Drew Vettleson, OF
Last Season: NR
Off last year’s list: Wade Davis, Tim Beckham, Reid Brignac, Kyle Lobstein.
Analysis: Like the Rays systems of the last few years, this one is stacked. Jeremy Hellickson is the top pitching prospect in the game and expected to make a splash this year. As more pitchers get moved (like Matt Garza this off season), they’ll continue to plug in new ones. Matt Moore looks like a front of the rotation pitcher, and Alex Colome and Nick Barnese could join him if they can harness their stuff. Chris Archer and Jake McGee could both be closers. Top fielding prospect Desmond Jennings will help absorb the loss of Carl Crawford.

15. Cito Culver, SS
Last Season: NR
Off last year’s list: Zach McAllister, Mark Melancon, Kelvin DeLeon, D.J. Mitchell, David Adams, Jose Ramirez.
Analysis: I’m normally the first one to talk about how overrated the Yankees’ system is due to east coast bias, but they have a truly good system right now. Jesus Montero would be the best prospect in baseball if he were a catcher in the long-term; I really don’t think he’ll stick. It’s OK for the Yankees though, since they have the best catching depth in the game. Gary Sanchez still has a long time before he hits New York, but if he can keep hitting like he did in Rookie Ball, he’ll be good. That leaves Austin Romine as the catcher of the future. The rotation looks like it’ll be stacked, with Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances, and Andrew Brackman looking like they could join Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova for the future rotation.

**Traded to Houston**
Off last year’s list: Jason Heyward, Cody Johnson, Adam Milligan, Zeke Spruill.
Analysis: The Braves continue to run pitching prospects through the system. Teheran is one of, if not the, top pitching prospects in the game; they have multiple pitchers that would be the top prospects in multiple other systems. Freeman will be the starting first baseman for the parent club; he’s one of the few top notch hitters in the system.
5. Cincinnati Reds

14. Ismail Guillon, P
Last Season: NR
15. Juan Duran, OF
Last Season: NR
Off last year’s list: Chris Heisley, Travis Wood, Matt Maloney
Analysis: This system is getting better. Aroldis Chapman is a closer in the making; I don’t see him working in the rotation. I think the Reds are on the same wavelength. Devin Mesoraco and Yasmani Grandal both have the potential to be regular back stops; it’ll be a race to see who is ready first. Yonder Alonso is a real question mark; I don’t think he’ll work in the outfield and the Reds won’t move Joey Votto. We’ll see how he handles left in the beginning of the season and see where his fate lies.

Last Season: 1
14. Ryan Bolden, OF
Last Season: NR
15. Chevez Clarke, OF
Last Season: NR
Off last year’s list: Peter Bourjos, Trevor Bell, Michael Kohn
Analysis: The Angels are in a good spot with Mike Trout at the top of the list. He’s a 5-tool talent. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I’m worried about Trout living up to his potential. Jordan Walden will help the team soon, rather than later; he’s seen some comparisons to Craig Kimbrel, who might be closing for the Braves. The system has some decent depth and is in the top 3rd of baseball.

Off last year’s list: Neftali Feliz, Justin Smoak, Michael Main, Kasey Kiker, Danny Gutierrez, Mitch Moreland, Max Ramirez.
Analysis: I think the Rangers system is a little overrated. Sure, Martin Perez is the real deal, even if he struggled last season from playing in a league where he was one of the youngest guys. I also like Jurickson Profar, but after that I’m weary of a lot of the players. Tanner Scheppers will be a reliever at best, and I wouldn’t be surprised he can’t handle closing; he might get his shot if they move Neftali Feliz to the rotation.

15. Alex Lavisky, C
Last Season: NR
Off last year’s list: Carlos Santana, Carlos Carrasco, Michael Brantley, Lou Marson
Analysis: Lonnie Chisenhall has turned into a legit prospect; there are no more character issues here. Alex White, Drew Pomeranz, and Jason Knapp have the opportunity to make the Indians rotation into something special; adding a good season from Joe Gardner or a return to health from Hector Rondon could help Cleveland build one of the best AL rotations. Jason Kipnis is considered the best, ready second base prospect in baseball. Overall, this is a very strong system.

Off last year’s list: Jhoulys Chacin, Esmil Rogers, Eric Young Jr., Sam Deduno, Hector Gomez
Analysis: Initially, I thought the Rockies had a weak system, but once I paid attention to the individual players, I changed my mind. Tyler Matzek is a front of the rotation starter and will complement Jhoulys Chacin nicely. Nolan Arenado and Wilin Rosario both figure to be regular hitters for the team; Kyle Parker will most likely join them. Chad Bettis and Christian Freidrich will fill in the back of the rotation nicely. After that, they’ll see a few guys move up.

Off last year’s list: Brett Wallace, Chad Jenkins, Brad Mills, Josh Roenicke, Brad Emaus.
Analysis: I really like Toronto’s system, which they’ve really built through trades. Kyle Drabek and J.P. Arencibia should be factors this year, while Brett Lawrie could be as well. Anthony Gose could be a top of the order hitter if he puts everything together. Most of the top 10 should be MLB regulars.

15. Eddie Rosario, OF

Off last year’s list: Wilson Ramos, Danny Valencia, Chris Parmelee.
Analysis: The Twins have a pretty deep system. Kyle Gibson should be a front end starter; he might not be a #1, but definitely a 2-3 at worst. Alex Wimmers will be a nice complement to Gibson. Aaron Hicks will probably be an All Star a few times over. Miguel Sano is young and raw, but he’ll be in the Twins infield for a quite a few years. Ben Revere hasn’t developed like the team has hoped, but he’s still young enough to hit his potential. I could see anyone else on the list having MLB careers.

15 Anthony Hewitt, SS
Last Season: NR
Off last year’s list: Phillippe Aumont, Anthony Gose, Tyson Gillies, Anthony Bastardo.
Analysis: This system is slowly coming back from the multiple trades they’ve made for pitching. Domonic Brown figures to be a fixture in the outfield this year, while Jonathan Singleton will look to learn the outfield. They have a slew of good pitching prospects; Jarred Cosart is the best among them. Trevor May could be the sleeper among them; he’s had a strong year in 2010 and people are looking for him to replicate it.

15. Jefry Marte, 3B
Last Season: 10
Off last year’s list: Ike Davis, Kyle Allen, Jon Niese, Ruben Tejada, Brad Holt.
Analysis: The Mets have 3 incredible prospects at the top of the list. I like Wilmer Flores quite a bit, even if he doesn’t stick at short; his bat will work at third. Jenrry Mejia is a close second; he’d probably be the top dog if the Mets would have been patient and not rushed him to the Majors last year. Matt Harvey can be a top of the rotation pitcher, if he can stand the strain of professional pitching schedules. Fernando Martinez has been in the picture for ever and still hasn’t proven himself at the big league level; time is starting to run out and he’ll be starting in Triple A again. 5-11 have the opportunity to be big league regulars, specifically Cesar Puello and Reese Havens. I also think Jeurys Familia and Jefry Marte could have breakout seasons.

Off last year’s list: Stephen Strasburg, Drew Storen, Ian Desmond, Michael Burgess, Aaron Thompson, Juan Jaime
Analysis: Any system with Bryce Harper at the top will look strong; he’s the real deal and the National Brass were very happy with him during big league camp. They were also impressed with Wilson Ramos enough to send Jesus Flores to the minors. It must be rough having such catcher depth; they also have Derek Norris, who would be the top prospect in a lot of other systems. Along with Harper, the 2010 draft class boasts A.J. Cole, Sammy Solis, and Rick Hague as top prospects; Cole and Solis project to be in the rotation. I think Hague could be a sleeper candidate.

Off last year’s list: Aaron Poreda, Wynn Pelzer, Cesar Carrillo, Logan Forsythe, Kellen Kulbacki.
Analysis: The Padres loaded up on talent by trading Adrian Gonzalez; they received Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, and Reymond Fuentes in the deal. Kelly is an ace in the making. Rizzo is slated to take over for Gonzalez in about a year. Fuentes is an athletic centerfielder that has MLB potential. Add that with their top guys – Simon Castro, Jaff Decker, and Donavan Tate – and they have a strong system. Castro will be the perfect #2 to go with Kelly. Tate is the real question mark; he’s very athletic, but it hasn’t translated to the field like the Padres were hoping.

Analysis: Many are hoping Dustin Ackley sticks at second, which it appears he will for the time being. He could be playing for Seattle this season (after he’s assured of not being a Super-2 player). His future double play mate, Nick Franklin is a pretty sure bet to join him in Seattle in the future. Michael Pineda will make a nice rotation-mate with Felix Hernandez. After these 3, there are some good players, but also a lot of hoping they come around as expected.

Off last year’s list: Pedro Alvarez, Brad Lincoln, Jose Tabata, Daniel McCutchen.
Analysis: For a team that normally has a good draft pick, they haven’t had much to show for it. This past draft gave the team Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie, 2 of the top pitching prospects available. Taillon is one of the best pitching prospects without even throwing a professional pitch. Tony Sanchez was considered a reach when drafted, but is really starting to emerge as a solid catching prospect. After that, there are many questions marks.

Analysis: Before the season, the Cardinals had Shelby Miller and a bare system; now they’ve had a few guys step forward and a few more added that help the depth. Miller is a top of the rotation pitcher; definitely top 10 pitching prospects in the game. Carlos Matias (or Martinez) should be as good as Miller; he’s 18 and already hitting the high 90s. Zach Cox looks like an everyday player; I still think his bat fits better at second base. I still think Allen Craig has the ability to be an everyday player.

Analysis: This system has seen better days. Outside of the top 4, there isn’t much to be excited about here. Most of the players they are acquiring in trades go straight to the parent club (Dan Hudson for example). I think Kevin Towers should do a decent job of building this organization in the next few drafts.

Analysis: The Cubs have done little to help their system recently. They gave up 3 guys that would have made this list for Matt Garza, but only received 1 that did from the Nationals for Tom Gorzelanny. Brett Jackson is probably the only impact player in the system. Josh Vitters still has a chance to do something, but time is running out; this will be the season that makes or breaks him.

Analysis: Much like the major league club, the minor league system needs some work. A lot of their top prospects that don’t make the majors end up fizzing out – see Billy Rowell, Brandon Erbe, Brandon Snyder, etc. At least Machado and Britton don’t look like that — yet.

Analysis: This system was kind of stagnant in 2010; no prospect really took a step forward. In fact, Chris Carter and Michael Taylor took steps back. Carter looked very bad in his first taste in the majors; he’s also learning the OF so he can crack the roster. Taylor struggled in his second stint in Triple A (the first in Oakland’s system). Grant Green still looks like a potential top line shortstop. I’m a big fan of Michael Choice; the outfielder is having a great spring. Tyson Ross may crack the rotation for Oakland, but will probably end up in the bullpen.

Analysis: 2010 was a breakout year for Brandon Belt; it was so good that he was seriously being considered for first base during spring training. Zack Wheeler looks like a top of the rotation starter. Gary Brown won’t hit for a ton of power in the corner outfield, but he can get on base and should hold value for the team. After that, a lot of the prospects become interchangeable.

Off last year’s list: Casey Kelly, Ryan Westmoreland, Ryan Kalish, Junichi Tazawa, Anthony Rizzo.
Analysis: The system took a definite hit when 3 of the top 10 prospects were used to acquire Adrian Gonzalez; I’d say Casey Kelly was #1 and Anthony Rizzo was in the #2-4 range. They have a few good pieces towards the top, but some of the later prospects seem a little bland.

Analysis: If there is one thing Detroit does with prospects, it is getting them to the Majors fast. Jacob Turner is the next pitcher on the fast track; I wouldn’t be surprised to see him as a September call up. Andy Oliver was the last example and will be the first guy called if there is an injury. Nick Castellanos will take more time than the others; he’s raw but should be a solid Major Leaguer. Dan Schlereth figures to be a regular in the bullpen.

Off last year’s list: Dan Hudson, Santos Rodriguez, David Holmberg, John Ely, Miguel Gonzalez, Jordan Danks.
Analysis: This system is starting to build itself up, but it’s still rather weak compared to other teams. Chris Sale is #1, if he can stick in the rotation; if he’s a reliever for the long term, he loses value. Being a reliever was the way to get him to the Majors fast. He’d drop to #3 or 4 as a reliever. Brent Morel will take over third in Chicago; he can hit well and is pretty good defensively. Dayan Viciedo will have to move to first eventually. After that, I’m not impressed much.

Analysis: This system has seen many players take a step back. Look at where some of these guys ranked last year: Aaron Miller (4), Chris Withrow (2), Ethan Martin (3), Garrett Gould (6), Scott Elbert (5), and Ivan DeJesus (10). Dee Gordon managed to stay at the level he played at; he’s still pretty raw, but is slowly making steps forward. This will be his make or break year. I’m very high on Zach Lee; he should be, at worst, a #2 starter. Jerry Sands, unlike most in the system, is coming off a great year and could displace James Loney this season.

Analysis: The Astros have their system headed in the right direction, but still have a long way to go. Jordan Lyles would have to be as close to elite as they get; he’s got a chance to make the Major League club out of spring. The group of guys from 3-7 are all high upside guys, but they have a lot of work to go to get there. After that, there doesn’t seem to be much to get excited about.

Analysis: Unfortunately for Brewers fans, this is one of the weakest systems in baseball. Trading Jake Odorizzi, Jeremy Jeffress, and Brett Lawrie killed the top of the system. All 3 would be elite talent; now they don’t have much. Mark Rogers has been in this system forever; he’s battled injury for his whole career, but looked good in 2010. I’m pretty high on Chad James and am expecting a big season out of the lefty. Mike Dunn should be a factor in the bullpen this year. After these guys, there are a lot of nice players that need to take a step forward to have true value.
