Jeff Luhnow and the First Overall Pick

When the draft comes in June, I think Astro fans will be surprised with the first overall pick. While Byron Buxton is the best player, I don’t think he’s going to be an Astro.

Why would a team pass on a talent like Buxton? Because Jeff Luhnow knows how to build a minor league system.

2012 Top 20 Prospects – Houston Astros

It’s prospect season again. I’ve had my rankings listed on team pages, but have been horrible about keeping those up to date. As I mentioned on the pages, I’m looking at other rankings when I make mine (along with scouting reports and my own opinion). Now the Houston Astros.

Peyton Manning – Out Of Another Club

Peyton Manning was released from the Indianapolis Colts this week.  He was the first pick overall in the 1998 draft and had been their starting quarterback ever since.  The Colts were the only club that he ever knew.  However when he signs with a new organization, he will leave another exclusive club; players that were drafted by one organization and played for that team their entire career (and a minimum of 14 years). Happy Belated Birthday, American League – 111 and Going Strong

Last week I wrote an article wishing the National League a Happy Birthday.  However, in my negligence I did not wish the American League a happy birthday on its birthday as well.  So, with my apologies to American league fans and the American League, I wish the American League a Happy 111th Birthday! Payroll vs. Playoffs, An Analysis of Twelve Seasons

One of the biggest complaints of the fans of Major League Baseball is the payroll difference between the haves and the have-nots.   There are complaints how teams such as the Yankees, Red Sox and others can spend almost at will.  There are other complaints that teams such as Pittsburgh and Kansas City cannot compete because they do not have the same resources.  There are complaints that the teams with all of the money always win and those without it have no chance.  I have decided to see if that is true, and if so, to what extent.  Continue reading

BBA Recommends Larkin, Bagwell for Hall of Fame

In the annual polling of members of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance, former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin and former Houston Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell were recommended for induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame. This is the third year the organization has conducted this survey of the membership.

Magic Numbers: 09/28/2011

One day left, and we have 2 ties for the Wild Cards. The Red Sox and Rays both won last night, so the AL WC hasn’t changed. The Cardinals won and the Braves lost, so now the 2 are in a must win situation. It looks like we could see 2 1-game playoffs tomorrow.

And to think, the playoff picture looked set at the beginning of the month.
