Let the record show that Dave Gavitt and the Big East Conference he pioneered both passed away last weekend.

I find it to be a sick twist of fate that Gavitt–who battled an unconfirmed sickness for a significant period of time–finally succumbed to his illness just a day before Syracuse and Pittsburgh defected to the ACC and destroyed the identity of what was perhaps college basketball’s most competitive conference.  Why?  To chase the apparently unending stream of college football money.
