There are only a few hours left before the Super Bowl. I’ve been running around all day and night trying to scrounge up cash from numerous affiliates and “so-called” friends. They are a shady bunch, mostly degenerates and thieves, but they’re still better than most other people you’ll meet in Los Angeles. This pool of gamblers has run away with itself and someone has to manage it all, might as well be me. In this upside-down world of sports betting there is no way to know if you are winning or losing, not until they close up the big book. And I figure the guy holding the book has just as good a shot as anybody, a better chance probably. Playing as the house has got to help me out, at least that’s what I’m holding out hope for.
The playoffs have not been too bad for me so far. I’ve come out about even (3-3 for my picks the past two weeks) and neither of my legs have been broken, a telltale sign that things are not too bleak.
“Don’t be too lighthearted AJ. Today is Super Sunday, for Christ’s sake!” Must not get too excited. One bad bet and I could be on a very slippery slope, digging myself out and such. The week ahead is going to be a good one for sports fans and a great week for bookies. Playoff football is upon us once again and that means there will be a lot of people with gambling problems coming out of the woodwork, people that you didn’t know had gambling problems, your uncle Freddy perhaps or maybe your best friend Robert. These people have serious gambling problems, you just didn’t know about it yet.
But all of that has changed now. (“I’m not sure I would bet that much on the Steelers uncle Freddy.” ”But it’s a sure thing. Tebow can’t throw against this defense. Pittsburgh will win by at least nine! It’s a sure thing, damnit! It’s a sure thing!!! Now give me my checkbook before I get my belt.”) You can clearly see that it has and will be an ugly affair in these, the long and arduous weeks of the NFL playoffs. But like any good gambling addict, when you dig yourself into a hole the only thing to do is to go ahead and dig yourself out. We better start the digging with next weekend’s games.
