The first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament are always magical. This year, Florida Gulf Coast and LaSalle captivated us as super-low seeds going on a dream run to the Sweet 16.

Bobby Valentine Hired as AD for Sacred Heart University…An Odd Hire.
Over the weekend I found this story to be interesting and puzzling at the same time. Former Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine has been hired as the athletics director at Sacred Heart University.
The University in Fairfield, Conn. said Friday that Valentine’s appointment will be formally announced next Tuesday. Sacred Heart fields 31 varsity teams – 17 for women and 14 for men. The Pioneers upgraded their varsity programs to NCAA Division I status in September 1999. They are a member of the Northeast Conference. Continue reading
Poll Pageantry: Fishing The Polls
It was another interesting weekend in college football, to say the least. We had four games involving teams in the top 25, one game with 2 top ten teams. There were also 8 other games of interest that I made note of.
There were 10 undefeated teams heading into this past Saturday’s games. What was interesting to me was that after 8 weeks of football, FOUR of the undefeated teams weren’t even in the top 10. THREE of which didn’t make the top 15 (save Rutgers at #15), including ONE TEAM that wasn’t even part of the top 20! NONE of The Big East teams were ranked higher than #15. The Big East gets NO respect from the BCS…I’m sorry, but in my opinion (I know…I’m full of them) after 8 weeks of football, there’s some SERIOUS lack of recognition going on around this biased entity known as the BCS.

POLL PAGEANTRY: The Top(less) 25
SO here we are.. standing at the college football season’s 50 yard line. Things are supposed to be starting to take shape. The polls are supposed to start reflecting the annual bowl picture, as predicted.. or is it?
The Bowl Poll, if you will.
Writers and computers alike have long ago made their predictions. It’s supposed to be an honor – and to some, I’m sure it is. But to me it seems more like someone’s witty little idea of gathering ALL of the (alleged) college football know-it-alls in a line like kids to a cookie jar, and watching them dig their own holes.. all the while, making them LIKE IT! Then proving them ALL wrong (or at least most of them) on a monumental scale!
We, the fans, get the luxury of watching this whole process unfold.

Comparing The Preseason AND Current AP Polls
With college football nearing the half-way point, things have certainly changed a bit in the college landscape. Thanks in part to graduation, attrition, injuries, my personal favorite – HUMAN ERROR. AND the little over-used cliche – “that’s why they play the game”, the AP poll is constantly changing week to week. There have been big winners, big losers, idlers, and our infamous “noodle scratcher” that seem to have floated beyond expectation.

One of Those Games
I’m sitting in the UCLA student union, watching Cal vs. UCLA. Honestly I would rather watch the Stanford vs. USC game. Cal is up seven points with twelve minutes to go in the second quarter. The game just started playing on the big TV in the lounge. I guess whoever runs the television has just realized that the game was on.
The punter was destroyed by an illegal block on the punt return. There is a couple to the right of me “watching the game” while studying on their computers. Both the couple and I let out an “Ooof” while watching the replay. It is not a fiery crowd. It is definitely and audience of casual fans.
If there were any serious football fans around I would start taking bets but I’m not sure that anyone here is much of a sports bettor, especially with their Bruins trailing by seven. Continue reading

MLB Mock Draft Version 3.0
Here is my most updated mock draft (previous two are here and here. Again, I have the pick from last time. I should have at 1 more mock right before the MLB draft next week.
I’ve compiled this mock using various scouting reports, news, and other mock drafts and value boards. There have been some really interesting changes, as injuries are hitting and players are rising. I have some of the same teams taking guys from my last mock, but with different picks. There are some many rumors floating around, if I get 5 of these picks correct, I’ll be happy.
