I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who was irritated when John Calipari won his first title last night. Not for any bigger reason than the fact that I think his recruiting tactics have to be dirty. But anti-Kentucky backlash runs much deeper.

For Chicago Bulls the Team Comes First
Miami has 2 superstars that characterize a generation of basketball. Orlando has Superman. New York has STAT and Melo. Chicago doesn’t have a player, they have a team. Obviously Derrick Rose stands as the team leader (and League MVP). But night-in and night-out the Bulls play as a group. They are not a group of individuals. There is not the feeling that one player is more important than the other.
The Bulls have role players, hungry players, go to players, secret weapons, versatility, reliability. It just depends on what they need on a given night.

Smith can flat out score the basketball. Outside of maybe Jamal Crawford, he’s probably the best natural scorer available in this free agency period. Continue reading

NBA Finals: A Must Win Game Five?
Everybody seems to think this is a must win game. With LeBron James needing to defend his manhood, the series tied at two and Dirk Nowitzki fighting a fever, I couldn’t help myself. I wanted to talk about this game, as it happened. I was joined by my commentary experts, T-Bone and 85% Sports’ own AJ.
9:00pm- Game five baby. It is so on. LeBron noted on twitter that today’s game is “now or never.” I think he means that either he steps up now or he is never considered a man ever again. Like, ever. Meanwhile, Dirk notes that game five is game seven for the Mavericks. In that case, what’s game seven? Game five? Game nine? What? Continue reading
Mavs Vs. Heat: Here We Go
Mavericks? Heat? This could be a Heat win in five games. It could be a seven game epic. Or it could be a Mavericks win in 5 games. Honestly, this series could go any way. Looking back at my predictions about this postseason so far, I didn’t have either of these teams even getting past their conference semi-finals, so really, what the hell do I know? Actually, I know a thing or two about what I’ve watched so far. And while I’ve already admitted that this could go one of many ways; I’ll attempt to dissect what I THINK will happen. First, let’s take a look back at how these teams got here. And analyze what kinds of teams they beat.

Message to the NBA: Avoid A Lockout If You Know What’s Good For You
If you’ve been following the NFL Lockout at all, you’ve seen that it’s an absolute mess. I mean, at the conclusion of the NFL Draft, there were different rules in place for organizations and personnel then there were when the draft started. That’s wild. And it seems like this is a situation that isn’t going to get wrapped up anytime in the near future.

Sixteen NBA Playoff Thoughts

Analyzing Game 1 From Chicago
Get a little nervous there, Bulls fans? You probably shouldn’t have. Just watching that game from start to finish left me feeling a few different ways about this Bulls team. First and foremost, even though it literally took the Bulls over 47 minutes to get their first lead (that’s an insane stat when you really think about it), there was only one point in the game when I doubted the Bulls would find a way to pull it out.

The Next Great NBA Rivalry
Throughout its history, the NBA has had some outstanding rivalries. Celtics/Lakers has been around pretty much forever. The Knicks and Heat had a great one in the mid to late 90′s. The bad boys in Detroit vs pretty much everybody in the late 80′s. Jordan against pretty much everybody. And more recently the Mavs and Spurs are always good for a great series. Excluding Detroit, all of these rivalries are still going pretty strong. The Heat and the Knicks not so much, but that will surely redevelop here in the next couple years with the personnel moves those franchises have both made. But there is one more rivalry that we have not yet seen but I’m sure is destined to be great. Continue reading
