ST. LOUIS – April 5, 2013 – Monday, April 8th marks the annual return of baseball to St. Louis as the Cardinals take on the Cincinnati Reds in a 3:15 p.m. game. Opening Day 2013 will feature a pre-game ceremony that will pay tribute to Stan Musial. Riding the Pine: Tony LaRussa and the Destruction of Order

Way back in 1996 when Tony LaRussa joined the Cardinals, I was in agreement with the masses – I was totally excited to have LaRussa leading my favorite team. What he’s done in STL has been remarkable; 3 losing records in 16 seasons, 2 100-win seasons, 8 playoff appearances, and 1 World Series Championship. It’s really remarkable.

GM Scores: Walt Jocketty

The next in the series will be Walt Jocketty, current GM of the Cincinnati Reds and formerly the St. Louis Cardinal’s GM. Jocketty has been the GM in Cincinnati for 2.5 seasons (he started during the 2008 season); he was the GM in St. Louis for 13 years (1995-2007). Jocketty has made 14 trades for the Reds (121 total) and 19 signings (183 total).

The second GM in the series is John Mozeliak of the St. Louis Cardinals (call me a homer, but I was interested to see how he’s done). Mozeliak took over after the 2007 season, so he’s had 3 seasons under his belt. He’s made 11 trades and 30 signings in that time and has had no draft picks make the majors.
