NBA Finals Preview

I’ve been thinking we’d reach this point dating back to the beginning of the season, the dream matchup of LeBron James’ Miami Heat and Kevin Durant’s Anti-Miami Heat.

This is the Finals the NBA wanted.  This is the Finals that basketball fans should want.

You can’t do much better than a Finals where the two best players in the league face off.  Not when those two players just finished 1-2 in MVP voting.  Not when those two players are in the middle of staggering playoff runs.  And as an added wrinkle, they’ll be guarding each other.  The last time the two best players in the NBA guarded each other in an NBA Finals was….correct me if I’m wrong, but we may have to go back to Russell vs Wilt.  Unreal. The Flawed Partnership of LeBron and Wade

Let’s be clear:  There will be no saving LeBron James from a playoff collapse this time.

There’s no excuse to be made.  You could talk about Chris Bosh’s injury being a factor, but that doesn’t change the fact that LeBron played one of his worst games of the year against Indiana last night.

22 points, 22 shots, 7 rebounds and general disinterest.  None of that stat line is appropriate for a three time MVP in the playoffs.  LeBron needs to win a championship now to silence his critics and save his own reputation. Continue reading →

This Week in Sports Gambling-1/10/2012

The week ahead is going to be a good one for sports fans and a great week for bookies.  Playoff football is upon us once again and that means there will be a lot of people with gambling problems coming out of the woodwork, people that you didn’t know had gambling problems, your uncle Freddy perhaps or maybe your best friend Robert.  These people have serious gambling problems, you just didn’t know about it yet.

But all of that has changed now.  (“I’m not sure I would bet that much on the Steelers uncle Freddy.”  ”But it’s a sure thing.  Tebow can’t throw against this defense.  Pittsburgh will win by at least nine!  It’s a sure thing, damnit!  It’s a sure thing!!!  Now give me my checkbook before I get my belt.”)  You can clearly see that it has and will be an ugly affair in these, the long and arduous weeks of the NFL playoffs.  But like any good gambling addict, when you dig yourself into a hole the only thing to do is to go ahead and dig yourself out.  We better start the digging with next weekend’s games.

Message to the NBA: Avoid A Lockout If You Know What’s Good For You

If you’ve been following the NFL Lockout at all, you’ve seen that it’s an absolute mess. I mean, at the conclusion of the NFL Draft, there were different rules in place for organizations and personnel then there were when the draft started. That’s wild. And it seems like this is a situation that isn’t going to get wrapped up anytime in the near future.

The Next Great NBA Rivalry

Throughout its history, the NBA has had some outstanding rivalries. Celtics/Lakers has been around pretty much forever. The Knicks and Heat had a great one in the mid to late 90′s. The bad boys in Detroit vs pretty much everybody in the late 80′s. Jordan against pretty much everybody. And more recently the Mavs and Spurs are always good for a great series. Excluding Detroit, all of these rivalries are still going pretty strong. The Heat and the Knicks not so much, but that will surely redevelop here in the next couple years with the personnel moves those franchises have both made. But there is one more rivalry that we have not yet seen but I’m sure is destined to be great. Continue reading →

Solving the NBA’s Identity Crisis

This is bizarre.  Last year, LeBron James was a heroic savior who people hoped would carry Cleveland to a title.  The unquestioned face of the NBA, he was crowned king of a league despite not winning a title or even coming close (note:  I don’t count Cleveland’s 2007 finals berth as close.  If you actually think the Cavs could have won that series, I have some Cavaliers season tickets to sell you.  Oh wait, you already have them (note:  this note crossed the line.  I won’t make any Cleveland jokes for the rest of the column)).  Continue reading →
