Using updated projections, I’d like to take a look at Cardinals pitchers and their rate stats, and see which are poised to keep up the great job they’ve been doing, which should be able to improve, and which ones should regress and be not as effective.
Let’s start with the captain, or ace, Adam Wainwright. Being that he has been absolutely ridiculous so far, he’s going to regress. His ERA has been 2.48 in 80 IP. That is fantastic.

The two standouts that the St. Louis Cardinals have thus far this season are young players: Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams. Both lead the team in WAR and are effective hitters, if not amazing ones.
It is too early to say just how amazing, but look at this: Matt Adams leads the team with 3 home runs and is just destroying the ball. I could list his God-like power numbers or wRC+, but it’s pointless. The guy is just off to a great start. Matt Carpenter has seen a lot more playing time and we can derive more info from it: his updated ZiPS projection is 3 WAR and he leads the team in batting average. Him being able to hold his own at second base as well as play third base with some at times flashy defense make him a very excellent player. Is he the next Ben Zobrist? I certainly hope so!

The next in the series will be Walt Jocketty, current GM of the Cincinnati Reds and formerly the St. Louis Cardinal’s GM. Jocketty has been the GM in Cincinnati for 2.5 seasons (he started during the 2008 season); he was the GM in St. Louis for 13 years (1995-2007). Jocketty has made 14 trades for the Reds (121 total) and 19 signings (183 total).
Jocketty averages 4.7 WAR per year due to his moves with the Reds; he’s averaged 20.9 over his career. He’s added a total of 11.8 WAR to the Reds and 312.6 WAR to the Cardinals. Continue reading
Every year, I tend to play fantasy GM for the Cardinals, as they are the team I root for. I try to think outside the box for ways to make the team better.
This off-season might be a little different, since the team will have to conserve resources for that all important extension that is wanted before the beginning of the season – and I’m not talking about Skip Schumaker.
