It’s been a week since St. Louis (and the Baseball World) lost Stan “the Man” Musial. I told Russ when I found out that I wasn’t surprised (his health had been going south for a while) but I was in shock. A week later, and it’s still a little surreal.
Russ did a good job already looking at what Stan meant to baseball. I’m going to tell everyone what he meant to St. Louis.

It’s really been too long since I’ve sat down and really wrote about baseball. Sure, I’ve started doing Bullpen Banter with Russ, but I really haven’t looked at much going on in the world of baseball.
- This has been a crazy off-season in St. Louis; one that has caused the World Series to be over-shadowed. It’s hard to believe the Cardinals just won it 2 months ago. I have a couple of reasons for this. First off, being in Milwaukee for games 6 and 7 was a huge reason; I missed all of the local coverage of the celebration, analysis, etc. I got to see parts, but Fox ended their coverage much earlier than the local stations.

We ran a piece a few months ago on Stan Musial when it was announced he was being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (Phil did a great job speaking of Stan and the award). Well, as of 1:00 PM CST time, he received the award.

Sorry if things have been a little slow on the site for the last few weeks – life comes up every now and then. I’ll get more into that later.
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend this off-season — the increased pay of relievers. I’m not talking about the closers either. The off-season started with Joaquin Beniot signing a 3 year, $16.5MM deal with the Detroit Tigers. I saw that as mighty high, although it matched the last major reliever deal from last season (Brandon Lyon sign for 3 years and $15MM with the Astros). Since then, we’ve seen multiple relievers get deals in the same range. Will they be worth it?

The Baseball Bloggers Alliance has it’s members vote on the Hall of Fame each year, just to see how the vote compares to the BBWAA’s inductees. We’re not required to write on it, but I wanted to just for the sake of doing it.
Like the BBWAA, the BBA members will have 10 votes and any player that is on 75% of the ballots would be inducted (if there were a BBA HOF).

Every year, I tend to play fantasy GM for the Cardinals, as they are the team I root for. I try to think outside the box for ways to make the team better.
This off-season might be a little different, since the team will have to conserve resources for that all important extension that is wanted before the beginning of the season – and I’m not talking about Skip Schumaker.

Last week, I was going to write a eulogy for the Cardinals when they got eliminated, but then I caught the second part of Ken Burns’ “The Tenth Inning” and decided against the eulogy.

5 Games – that’s all that separates the first place Reds and second place Cardinals. Not insurmountable, but not a walk in the park either.
A buddy told me the Redbirds have a better chance at the Wild Card than the division. He said it’s hard to make up ground on teams you don’t play against. I don’t agree for multiple reasons. First off, the Cardinals only have to worry about what the Reds do, versus watching the Giants, Braves, and Rockies. Also, while we do play the Braves for 3 more games, I can’t say that really playing the Wild Card standings head on.
