In Part 3, I did a top 35 players list, who I recommend checking out. Because if you’re like me, you have a fantasy baseball draft coming up very soon. Or if you just have an interest in projections or sabermetric stats and are a fan of the game who thinks that OPS is not the be all and end all stat (I surely hope you don’t think batting average is).

Billy Beane’s Draft History

After looking at what the Astros fans could expect in the 2012 Draft from new GM Jeff Luhnow, I decided to look at Billy Beane and his history of drafting college players.

Beane is known for drafting college players and for his tirade in Moneyball for his team taking Jeremy Bonderman in the 2001 draft. The belief is that college players are closer to making the majors due to their more advanced level of competition and that they present less risk than high schoolers.

GM Scores: Walt Jocketty

The next in the series will be Walt Jocketty, current GM of the Cincinnati Reds and formerly the St. Louis Cardinal’s GM. Jocketty has been the GM in Cincinnati for 2.5 seasons (he started during the 2008 season); he was the GM in St. Louis for 13 years (1995-2007). Jocketty has made 14 trades for the Reds (121 total) and 19 signings (183 total).

Jocketty averages 4.7 WAR per year due to his moves with the Reds; he’s averaged 20.9 over his career. He’s added a total of 11.8 WAR to the Reds and 312.6 WAR to the Cardinals. Continue reading →

GM Scores: John Mozeliak

The second GM in the series is John Mozeliak of the St. Louis Cardinals (call me a homer, but I was interested to see how he’s done). Mozeliak took over after the 2007 season, so he’s had 3 seasons under his belt. He’s made 11 trades and 30 signings in that time and has had no draft picks make the majors.

Mozeliak averages 11.0 WAR per year due to his moves. He’s added a total of 33.1 WAR over his tenure. Continue reading →
